What's so good about handmade?

People will often ask – what is so good about handmade soap?

Well the short answer is – The ingredients

When you buy our handmade soaps you know exactly what you’re getting in your bar of soap. All the ingredients are listed in order of descending quantities. (The main ingredient is Olive oil).

There are no unpronounceable ingredients – no numbers that the average person has any idea what they are.  The only chemical that we use is Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), which is necessary in the manufacture of any soap. Our recipes have been formulated and checked using specific industry calculators to make sure that the exact amount of NaOH is used. When a soap recipe is correctly formulated there is no NaOH left in the soap after the 24 – 48 hour saponification process.

Saponification is the primary chemical reaction of soap making

Saponification literally means "turning into soap" from the root word, "sapo", which is Latin for soap. The by-products of the saponification reaction are glycerine and soap. It is an exothermic (gives off heat) chemical reaction that occurs when fats or oils (fatty acids) come into contact with lye (a base, such as Sodium Hydroxide.) Although lye is used to make soap there is no lye left after saponification is complete.

Oils + lye (dispersed in water) = soap + glycerine

The saponification process generally takes about 24-48 hours to complete once the lye and oils have been mixed and the raw soap has been poured into the mould. This process can be sped up by adding more heat, or slowed down by keeping the process very cool. To make a nice hard, long lasting soap bar, the soaps are left to cure (dry) for 4-6 weeks, and sometimes even months.

Soap cleanses the skin while glycerin moisturises it.

Glycerine is naturally produced during the soap making process. In fact, gram for gram, glycerin costs more than soap, which is why most commercial soap companies remove the glycerin from the soap and sell it to manufacturers of lotions, and then add strong chemicals to act as a moisturiser in their soaps.

At Keep It Natural we leave the soap the way it’s meant to be – cleansing and moisturising, and totally free of nasty extras

  • I appreciate your soaps are natural but so is lemon myrtle and orange. When I use the soap which these 2 products are included I end up with a rash. This has happened to me before with another soap company that make home soap which included lemon myrtle which I got from the soap factory in Hahndorf SA. I will be reading labels more carefully from now to make sure there are no citrus type products in the natural soaps I buy as I am allergic to them
